If you've tried everything and your stomach area is still a saggy mess, you might want to consider a tummy tuck.
Though they are not advised for some people, a tummy tuck (or "abdominoplasty" in medical terms) can be the answer for others.
A tummy tuck is basically a surgical procedure that involves removing skin from the abdomen. The skin is usually removed from the lower and middle part of the abdomen. It also often involves the tightening of the abdominal muscles.
Usually women seek out a tummy tuck after having children and finding that no matter how many sit-ups they do, they still have a "pooch" in their stomach. For many women, this is a real problem, especially if they are very thin to begin with.
There are some people, however, for whom a tummy tuck is not recommended. These include:
1 - Very overweight people who might see a flatter abdomen if they lost weight. This isn't considered weight loss surgery.
2 - Anyone who has unrealistic expectations about what their body will look like after the surgery. Surgeons try to caution people that often the result is subtle, though it can be dramatic, and it all depends on the patient and the patient's body.
3 - Any woman who is pregnant or might soon become pregnant.
Anyone who plans to lose weight. The tummy tuck should be delayed until after the weight loss is achieved.
Often the result after a tummy tuck isn't just a flatter tummy but a smaller waist, since the procedure involves the removal of fat and corrects sagging and loose skin. For women who like to wear a bikini at the beach or pool, the tummy tuck scar is usually located below the underwear or bikini line, so it's not obvious to anyone other than the woman that she's had cosmetic surgery.
Although most women have a tummy tuck for cosmetic reasons, sometimes women have it to correct weak abdominal muscles that are causing back or other problems. In that case, it's considered medically necessary and is usually covered by medical insurance.
During a tummy tuck, an incision is made and the skin is separated from the tissue underneath. The loose abdominal tissue is sutured together which creates that firmer abdominal area we are looking for. Because the area is tightened, sometimes a smaller waist emerges as well. Any excess skin is also removed before the incision is closed with either staples or sutures.
So there you have it.
Although it might seem that the process of a tummy tuck is a little unnerving, tummy tucks are the most common cosmetic procedure requested by patients in plastic surgeon's offices.
