Is Liposuction For You?

It should come as no surprise to learn that liposuction is the most commonly performed procedure by cosmetic surgeons. Advertising is at saturation level, and now most people are familiar with the term and have at least a vague idea of what it entails. Because liposuction has become so well known, and generally with favorable reviews, it is little wonder that more and more people are finding the means to undergo this type of surgery. Liposuction used to be for an elite few, but now with more and more cosmetic surgeons specializing in this field, it has become widely available to all.

But who are all these people lining up for surgery and why are they doing it? More and more ordinary Americans, both male and female, are turning to liposuction to remove their unwanted fat areas. Sure, the rich and famous are there too, but with attractive financing terms being offered as an enticement to clients, liposuction is now within the reach of increasingly more and more working class people. Why they are doing it is obvious to anyone who has ever tried to spot reduce stubborn areas of fat.

Liposuction is however best suited to those people of normal weight who have areas of fat that seem impervious to all amounts of exercise. Doctor's stress that it is not weight reduction, and in fact the total amount of fat removed may only weigh a few pounds. What it does do, and do very well, is to sculpt the body into a more attractive shape. The target areas are usually the buttocks, hips, thighs, stomach, arms, breasts and neck. For anyone who has these problem areas, they know that even with drastic weight loss, certain amounts of fat always seem to remain.

Cosmetic surgeons will usually prefer one type of liposuction procedure over another. A good doctor will be proficient in all types and will be able to use whichever one is more appropriate for his client. It is not a case of one method suits all people. Tumescent liposuction is probably the most popular for surgeons and patients alike, as it is an outpatient procedure performed under a local anesthetic. This provides a far better outcome such as faster recovery, and much better cosmetic results. Because the patient is awake, he or she is able to cooperate with the doctor by changing positions which results in much better body sculpting. This type of liposuction also carries the least amount of risk, and if there are problems then they are usually able to be easily corrected.

Liposuction is also often partnered with other cosmetic procedures. Often some areas to be treated will have a better outcome if they are treated more traditionally, that is under the surgeon's knife. A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is one such area, which for example may be combined with areas of liposuction on the thighs and arms. Many women and men prefer to have it all over and done with at once, even though there may be a little longer recovery time. Usually for multiple procedures the surgeon will also offer some sort of discount, which can be an attractive incentive for some. It becomes apparent when looking at all these issues how important it is to have confidence in your surgeon's abilities to be able to perform not just one type of procedure but many.

There is little doubt that liposuction techniques are going to continue to be improved upon over the next few years. Already ultrasound is being used to great advantage particularly when there are large areas of fat to be removed. At this stage though, ultrasonic liposuction is proving to be much more expensive because of the need for costly, complicated equipment. It does however offer many advantages, but along with these come some added risks which need to be carefully examined before making a final decision.

Liposuction can shape your body close to perfection, if you do it right the first time. Find out where to start!
